TRIVIA

  • Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day was originally issued as the lead single from For Once in My Life, Stevie Wonder’s 10th studio album, on 30 April 1968.  At that particular juncture, Stevie was just on the verge of turning 18 years old
  • On the B-side of the single is a song called Why Don’t You Lead Me to Love, which itself was not featured on any album until 2007.
  • This track topped Billboard’s Hot Rhythm & Blues Singles chart (which is now known as Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs).
  • Fellow Motown signee Michael Jackson (1958-2009) released a cover of Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day during the summer of 1972, as featured on his second solo album, Ben.  When MJ recorded the cover, he was 13 years old.
  • Hugo Montenegro (1925-1981), a musician who made a name for himself composing soundtracks for movies, dropped a tribute album to Stevie Wonder in 1974 titled Hugo in Wonder-Land..  Apparently, that project consists solely of instrumentals.  And amongst the 12 songs he covered was Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day.

LYRICAL ANALYSIS

We are once again met with romantic fare from 1960s’ Stevie.  But this time around, he isn’t gushing over the apple of his eye per se.

Rather, the addressee is her boyfriend who, as implied in the verses, is a toxic partner.  So Stevie is foreseeing that eventually, the girl is going to get fed up and leave her current beau.  And when she does, he’s eagerly waiting on the sidelines to scoop her up.

So the vocalist actually proceeds to warn the addressee.  Therefore, the tone of the lyrics don’t come off as taunts or as if Stevie is feening for the lady.  Instead, he’s letting her boyfriend that there is someone, himself actually, who is lurking in the wings and, unlike him, is more than willing to treat her right.  So sentimentally, this track comes off as being sort of a predecessor to songs such as R. Kelly‘s When a Woman’s Fed Up (1998).
